My wife and I are big animal lovers. When we moved to Merced, California, we had two Border Collies. Since then, our family of pets has grown. Strays often showed up at our door, or at least we thought they were strays. One day, a cat with only three paws showed up, so we brought him inside and tried to find his owner. He ended up becoming part of our family.
We rescued another cat so he would have a buddy to play with. But a year later, the new cat went outside, jumped over the neighbor’s fence, and their dog attacked him.
So time goes by, I have my two dogs and two cats now. My neighbor now has a cat. This poor cat I see outside more than I see it let inside, so the cat comes over and eats from the bowl of food I set outside for the strays. At first, this cat won’t let me get close but as time goes by, the cat starts to letting me get close and pet it.

One day, my neighbor got evicted, and they left, taking their things—and I thought, the cat was gone too. But then the cat appeared from under their house and came straight to me. Being the animal lover I am, I brought the cat inside. My wife and I thought maybe we could find her a new home, but no luck. That’s when saving one cat turned into saving six more.
It turned out she was pregnant! At first, we thought she was just getting bigger from eating well, but we were wrong.
On September 1, 2022, she gave birth to six kittens. Two are black with tan stripes, and one of them, which we call the runt, is smaller than the others. The other four are white, just like their mom.

It’s now February, and we’ve found homes for two of the kittens. The others? Looks like they’re staying with us. We’ve taken in a lot of animals before, and if we can’t find someone to love them like we do, it’s better they stay with us.
As of February 14, the mom, whom we call Pearl, has been spayed. Next, we’ll take care of the only female kitten we have left, and then the three boys.
I love how each one has its own personality. They all enjoy cuddling or lying next to us. Whenever they come up to us, they start purring.
I wouldn’t change a thing if I had to do it all over again.
