When William fell in love with Catherine, He did not just fall in love with her but also with her family; with the emotional security and support they provided to each other as a family and to him, by extension of dating Catherine. In Meet Ella, James Middleton revealed how much of a fixture William was in their family life and how William would stay with Catherine in their home when Carole and Michael were away on Holidays. How even after marriage, W&C and their children would still come to stay at the Middletons.
The Middleton’s neighbors described in an article how William was always there and stayed for supper, then stayed to talk with Michael, way after the supper had ended. And then you start seeing the similarity between William and the Man he affectionately calls “Dad”
Despite coming from the wealthy Lupton family of bankers, mill owners, and politicians, Michael is described by his neighbors as “a very humble and quiet family Man”.
Indeed a family friend commented of Catherine’s father: “He is never happier than when he is with his family. The desire to be seen with the ‘Right’ sort of people eludes him. Catherine’s feet are still on the ground, largely because of Michael. He doesn’t get too swept up in the grandeur of her new life, and Catherine loves him for that. She gets a lot of her characteristics from her father.”

Indeed, Michael Middleton, despite being a wealthy businessman, was always a present father to his 3 children and a devoted husband to Carole. Something very similar to William.
Carole Middleton, for her part, spoke once in an interview after W&C married and said: “If I come across as normal, that would be great because that’s what I am. After my children married my biggest fear was that I’d lose my family, but we’ve stayed very close.”
“It is very important to me that my family stays together. I want to run in the hills with my grandchildren, climb trees, and go to the playground. As long as I can, I will do it: I will cook with them, dance with them, and ride my bike with them.
In this, we can see how Catherine is emulating her mother as a mother and wife. She has been very open about about her happy childhood and said on the ‘Happy Mum and happy baby’ podcast: “I had a very happy childhood. I was very lucky, I come from a very strong family. My parents did a lot for us, for my brothers and me. Now that I’m a father, I appreciate what they sacrificed for us.
So when you listen to both Michael and Carole’s approach to parenthood and family, you can see, that it is not Diana that W&C are emulating, it is the Middletons: It is their mental and emotional stability, it is the strength of their marriage and very private family life; it is their outdoorsiness and love of nature and adventure; it is their prioritizing their children and marriage.

This reminds me of this anecdote revealed in Katie Nicholls’s book, Kate our future Queen”. In Sept 2007, William secretly whisked Catherine to the Seychelles. They had reconciled and were keeping it under the radar. And so it was revealed the couple checked into the resort under the aliases “Martin and Rosemary Middleton”; an interesting inside joke I am sure.
But it remains that seeing their family video last year, I finally realized that William and Catherine have modeled their successful relationship on 2 distinct couples: In their public Royal life, they emulate The Queen and Prince Philip’s marriage and relationship: they are the dignified and capable future King and Queen. They have a playfulness to them but they keep things professional and project stability.
But in their Private Lives, they go back to simply being the private university sweethearts, or shall I say, the married Martin and Rosemary Middletons.
